Occupancy rate and ticket type usage surveys for public transport modes in Athens, Greece

Occupancy rate and ticket type usage surveys for public transport modes in Athens, Greece

Within the contract framework, field surveys were planned, organised and implemented for a predefined sample of bus lines and services of public transport modes. The main scope was to update estimations regarding the use of different fare products, as well as occupancy rate for all modes of public transport in Athens, Greece.

OASA, within the framework of its regulatory role and as a coordinator of the public transport system of Athens, systematically conducts surveys in order to update the estimations of the use of different fare products, as well as occupancy rates on all public transport modes. The project “Survey on the type of tickets used and the occupancy in all public transport modes of Athens” was elaborated in 2007 under this programme of surveys.

The scope of the surveys conducted within the framework of the project was to provide results to be used by OASA for the determination of revenues’ distribution coefficients from the various fare products (such as integrated tickets, monthly cards) among the different public transport operators, as well as parameters for their monthly adjustment. In addition, surveys aimed at the use of results for the monitoring of commercial operation of public transport modes, for the planning of public transport system and the future redesign of the system and fare products.

Field surveys were planned, organised and implemented for a predefined sample of lines and services of public transport modes. Collected data were inserted in a database, checked and revised. Following on, data were statistically analysed and redefined to match the relevant statistical populations and the necessary indicators and factors were estimated. SYSTEMA contributed in the implementation of this project and undertook the task of selecting the sample of lines and route services, which was necessary for survey realisation. In addition, we coordinated the surveys procedures, including planning, organisation, programming, implementation and daily monitoring and adaptation of the surveys.
