Athens International Airport: Metro & Suburban Train Operational Assessment Study and Analysis of User Characteristics

Our client was looking to investigate the operational characteristics and effectiveness of the metro and suburban train services, which provide links between Athens International Airport and the city of Athens. Within this framework, and based on our experience in public transport systems, we provided a market survey research approach to thoroughly explore preferences of rail and metro passengers.

Airport access is considered as one of the most important factors, significantly influencing the overall quality of air services provided. In this framework, it is considered of great importance for the Athens International Airport (AIA) to have a sound knowledge of all airport users’ needs and preferences and establish a thorough understanding of both operational effectiveness and attractiveness to customers for all transportation links, in order to ensure improved services and optimal future planning.

Within the above framework, the main scope of the project was to investigate the operational characteristics and effectiveness of the metro and suburban train services, which provide links between the airport and the city of Athens, based on the six months experience accumulated after the opening of the new train station within the airport premises. To this end, a market survey research approach was engaged in order to thoroughly explore the preferences of all rail and metro passengers. More specifically, the following tasks consisted of the three main activities during the study:

  • Questionnaire design, aiming at covering all user characteristics.
  • Elaboration of a market survey on both metro and suburban train services, during peak and off-peak periods on both directions.
  • Evaluation of survey results, as well as proposals for improving operational characteristics and quality of both metro and suburban train links.
