Our client was looking to evaluate the current bus services to Athens International Airport serving Attica (Athens wider region) and to identify new routes/services to be operated by Attica Regional Bus (KTEL) bus company. It was also of particular interest to Athens International Airport (AIA) to explore the possibility of a direct service between the port of Lavrio and the airport. The main goal was to enhance the Airport’s catchment area, improve existing services, and upgrade the level of service provided, in order to ensure a more efficient planning of future intermodal passenger services.

During the past years and mainly due to the operation of the Athens International Airport (AIA) and the new transport infrastructure developed, the Mesogeia region in Attica (areas around the airport) has been developing rapidly. Moreover, the port of Lavrio, located south of the airport, has become over the years an important transport hub, especially for passengers. This area is served by the private bus company “Attica Regional Buses – KTEL Attikis S.A”, which is exclusively serving the suburbs around Athens.

Within the above framework, the objectives of the study were to evaluate current bus services of KTEL to the airport and to identify new routes/services to the airport to be operated by KTEL Attikis. It was also of particular interest to AIA to explore the possibility of a direct service between the port of Lavrio and the airport. The main goal was to enhance the Airport’s catchment area, improve existing services, and upgrade the level of service provided, in order to ensure a more efficient planning of future intermodal passenger services.

In order to reach the above objectives, specific market research techniques were engaged. More specifically, users’ characteristics and needs were investigated, by analyzing data collected through on-board surveys and at the same time, the existing services were overviewed and analysed. In addition, the future bus connections to the Airport and in particular, the connection of AIA with the port of Lavrio were thoroughly investigated, with regards to their feasibility and viability.
